The members of the Sheffield Down Syndrome Support Group are generally parents, carers and families of individuals with Down's Syndrome. We try to have informal group meetings about every 3 months. We like to offer support and informal advice to new members particularly about support services in Sheffield, schools, health etc. The meetings also discuss fund raising and expenditure proposals. We have a number of get togethers for the children with families, such as an annual Christmas party with a Father Christmas, afternoons playing games in the park, or visits to places like The Deep in Hull. We have in the past held two spring fayres and a race night to raise money for these events and we receive a number of personal and corporate donations from local companies. In the past we have also been successful in securing a grant from the community fund to finance two conferences on relationships and sexuality in individuals with learning difficulties.
We also try to retain contact with other local support groups such as Mencap and Family Support Group. You may be a new parent of a child with Down syndrome or an about-to-be parent who does not want or feel ready to come to a group, even though we are very informal. If, however, you would like to talk to one of us privately then feel free to email us. We have all experienced highs and lows and it can be helpful to share, talk and listen. Events and activities If you know about any groups or activities for children with learning difficulties please let me know. If something that has been running is discontinued also please let me know. Hopefully, this site can be a good resource to centralise and make available all these things.
